The historical location game

Most location games use today's streets. This one sends you to a place as it looked at a specific moment in history, before the motorway, before the tower blocks, sometimes before the city. You pin where on Earth you are standing, then put a year on it.

How it works

  1. Step 1

Explore a 360° scene of a place at one real moment in its past.

  2. Step 2

Pin it on the world map. The closer, the more points.

  3. Step 3

Name the year too, then see what happened there.

Finding a place without modern clues

There are no road markings, licence plates or bollards to lean on. Historical locations are read from what lasts: the shape of the hills, the river, the stone used to build, the style of the roofs, the script on a sign. Those clues are slower but more reliable, and they work for every century.

Famous places come back in different centuries, so a familiar square can look very different from one round to the next.

Play by country

Pick one country and play five rounds from its history, or play the mixed world game. There is also a daily challenge with the same five scenes for everyone.

Ways to play

Questions

What is a historical location game?
A geography guessing game set in the past. You are shown a place at a moment in history and have to work out where on Earth it is.
Can I play one country only?
Yes. Country runs give you five rounds from a single country's history.
Do I also have to guess the year?
Yes. Location and year are scored together, so a strong map guess with a rough year still scores well.
