How to read a French scene

France is the country of the deliberate street. Between the 1850s and 1870s Haussmann rewrote Paris into cream stone, iron balconies and grey zinc roofs, and the provinces borrowed the look โ€” so the question is usually which France you are in, not which century.

    Architecture

Cream limestone facades with continuous second- and fifth-floor balconies and zinc mansards are Haussmann, 1853โ€“1870. Half-timbering points to Normandy or Alsace. Red-tiled shallow roofs and shutters put you in the Midi.

    Landscape

Plane trees lining a straight road, vineyards on slope, a village clustered under a chรขteau. Bocage โ€” high hedged banks between tiny fields โ€” is Normandy and Brittany, and it is why 1944 fighting there was so slow.

    Period tells

Gothic cathedrals with flying buttresses start at Saint-Denis around 1140. Iron and glass โ€” Eiffel, Les Halles, station sheds โ€” is 1850โ€“1900. Concrete rebuilt city centres like Le Havre are post-1945.

    Build a French round yourself

You don't need a photograph or a map reference. Name a moment โ€” "Lascaux cave paintings, Dordogne" โ€” and the builder fills in the year, drops the pin, writes the factoid and paints a 360ยฐ scene you can stand inside. Publish it and it joins this collection for everyone.

      Auto-fill the history

The year, the exact coordinates and a one-sentence factoid come back filled in. Everything stays editable.

    3. Step 3

      Generate the scene

A 4K 360ยฐ panorama of that place in that year, ready to spin around inside the game.
