Dating a picture is a chain of small reads. Roof lines and window glass narrow a European street to a century. A hem length, a collar or a uniform narrows it to a decade. A tram, a telegraph pole, a paved kerb or a parked car narrows it to a few years. The scene is built so that chain exists — there is always something in view that pins the moment down.
The scoring rewards the reasoning, not the lucky click. A guess ten years out still scores well; a guess two centuries out does not. Over five rounds you can feel your own reading get sharper, which is the part most guessing games skip.
Each game is five scenes. After every guess you get the real year, the real place, and a short sourced note on what you were looking at — the event, why it happened there, and the detail that gave the date away.
There is a new daily challenge every day that everybody plays from the same five scenes, plus runs by era and by country if you want to specialise.
