For three centuries Bratislava crowned the kings of Hungary and Banská Štiavnica taught the world how to mine. Slovakia's scenes are castles on limestone crags, mining towns in volcanic basins and wooden churches built without a single nail.

Granite peaks rising abruptly out of forest with no foothills are the High Tatras. Terraced vineyards above a wide river are the Danube's Little Carpathian edge. Waste heaps and adits in wooded valleys mean the old mining districts around Banská Štiavnica and Kremnica.
Period tells
Hungarian and German on an older shopfront is pre-1918 Upper Hungary. Panelák housing estates in bands up hillsides are 1970s. Castle ruins left unrestored on crags are usually eighteenth century — many were slighted after the Rákóczi revolt.
