How to read a Greek scene

Greece is limestone, light and sea, with the classical layer sitting under a much longer Byzantine and Ottoman one. Most Greek scenes are far more recent than the marble in them suggests.

    Architecture

Doric and Ionic marble orders are 6thโ€“4th century BC. Small cross-in-square churches in stone and brick with tiled domes are Byzantine. Whitewash and blue on cubic houses is Cycladic island vernacular, mostly 19thโ€“20th century.

    Landscape

Bare pale mountains meeting deep blue water, olive terraces, cypress and phrygana scrub. Pine-covered slopes mean the Peloponnese or Halkidiki; treeless rock means the Cyclades.

    Period tells

Neoclassical Athens with marble facades dates to after 1834, when the capital moved there. Dense polykatoikia apartment blocks with recessed balconies are 1955โ€“1975. Ottoman minarets survive mainly in Thrace.
