    Croatian History Guesser

A Roman emperor's retirement palace with a city living inside it, a merchant republic that argued with Venice for four hundred years, and a limestone coast where every town is walled. Croatia is one of the easiest countries to place and one of the hardest to date.

How to read a Croatian scene

Croatia is two countries visually: the Adriatic โ€” white limestone, terracotta pantiles, Venetian shutters, no gardens โ€” and the Pannonian interior, which looks like Austria and Hungary with plaster, onion domes and flat farmland. There is almost no middle ground.

    Architecture

Bare limestone walls with pantile roofs and green shutters are coastal, any century from 1300. A winged lion of St Mark carved over a gate means Venetian rule, 1420โ€“1797. Yellow-and-white plaster with a bulbous church tower is Habsburg interior, 1700โ€“1900.

    Landscape

Karst โ€” grey rock, low scrub, dry-stone walls and no topsoil โ€” is Dalmatia and Istria. Islands strung parallel to the coast are the Kvarner and Dalmatian chains. Flat fields with poplars and oxbow lakes are Slavonia, 400 km from the sea.

    Period tells

A Roman peristyle used as a town square means Split. Shell-scarred plaster and repaired roofs in the interior date to 1991โ€“95. Big concrete hotels on the coast in a modernist idiom are 1965โ€“1980, the Yugoslav tourism boom.
