How to read a Hungarian scene

Hungary is Habsburg grandeur on a plain. Budapest's monumental 1896 building spree gives the city a single strong date, and the countryside stays flat, wide and agricultural.

Architecture

Neo-Gothic and eclectic historicism along the Danube is 1873–1902 — Parliament, the bridges, the boulevards. Ottoman baths and a few minarets survive from 1541–1699. Thermal bath halls in Secession style are 1910s.

Landscape

The Great Plain is flat grassland and farmland with lonely farmsteads and sweep wells. Lake Balaton is shallow and reed-fringed. Hills only in the north and around Pécs.

Period tells

Blown bridges and shell-marked facades in Budapest are 1944–45. Burned-out tanks and torn flags with the centre cut out are October 1956. Trabants and Ladas are the 1970s–80s.
