    Belgian History Guesser

Europe's crossroads and, for centuries, its battlefield. Belgian rounds move from Flemish cloth towns and altarpieces to the ridge where Napoleon lost, the salient where the twentieth century turned industrial, and a steel molecule built for a world's fair.

How to read a Belgian scene

Belgium is guild halls, coal and battlefields. The medieval cloth towns are as ornate as anywhere in Europe, and much of what stands was rebuilt after two wars fought across the same fields.

    Architecture

Stepped-gable guild houses around a grand market square with a belfry are Flemish, 14thโ€“17th century. Art Nouveau ironwork and whiplash curves are Brussels around 1893โ€“1905. Brick terraces with varied facades are 19th-century industrial towns.

    Landscape

Flat polder and canals in Flanders; wooded rolling Ardennes in the south. Slag heaps in a line across the Walloon coal basin. Poplar rows along dead-straight roads.

    Period tells

Ypres and the Westhoek were rebuilt brick-by-brick after 1918 โ€” the medieval look there is 1920s work. Atomium and Expo 58 date Brussels scenes to 1958.
