    Bulgarian History Guesser

Thracian gold, the first Slavic alphabet, five centuries under Ottoman rule and a national revival carved in wood and painted in stripes. Bulgaria's scenes are dense with clues if you know that its churches were often built half-buried to stay under the height a mosque was allowed.

How to read a Bulgarian scene

Bulgaria reads as low stone-and-timber towns under bare limestone ridges, with Byzantine brickwork where the money was and Ottoman-era street plans nearly everywhere. The National Revival of the 1830sโ€“70s is the loudest visual period: overhanging upper storeys, bright plaster and stripes.

    Architecture

Alternating brick and stone bands with recessed blind arches are Byzantine-influenced, 900โ€“1400. Whitewashed houses with a heavy timber upper floor jutting over the street are Revival, 1830โ€“1878. Churches sunk a metre below ground level are Ottoman-period โ€” the height limit was measured from the street.

    Landscape

Rose fields in long pink rows put you in the Kazanlak valley in May or June. Bare karst ridges with beech below are Stara Planina; sand and umbrella pines mean the Black Sea coast, where the resorts are all post-1955.

    Period tells

Cyrillic is present from the tenth century, so it dates nothing on its own โ€” but a Latin-script shop sign in Bulgaria is post-1990. Thracian mounds appear as unnatural grass domes in flat fields; giant concrete monuments on hilltops are 1970s.
