    Russian History Guesser

Eleven time zones of history, most of it decided in two cities. Tsars crowned in the Kremlin, a capital raised out of a swamp by decree, an invading army walking into a burning Moscow, and a revolution that started with a rifle shot across a river.

How to read a Russian scene

Russia is scale plus repetition. Onion domes, imperial pastel palaces and identical apartment blocks each belong to a distinct era, and all three still stand in most cities.

    Architecture

Whitewashed churches with onion domes and kokoshnik gables are pre-Petrine. Pastel Baroque and neoclassical facades are St Petersburg, 1712โ€“1850. Stalinist skyscrapers with spires are 1947โ€“1957; five-storey khrushchyovka blocks are 1957โ€“1965.

    Landscape

Birch and pine taiga with flat horizon over most of the country. Black-earth steppe in the south, larch and permafrost in Siberia, log izba villages along a muddy road.

    Period tells

Trams, cobbles and horse carts together suggest 1900โ€“1930. Red banners and Lenin statues are 1920โ€“1991. Bare plinths and improvised markets in front of grand buildings read as 1991โ€“1998.

    3. Step 3

      Generate the scene

A 4K 360ยฐ panorama of that place in that year, ready to spin around inside the game.
