Mexico puts a colonial city directly on top of a pre-Hispanic one, frequently using the same stone. Volcanic rock, arcaded plazas and painted stucco carry most scenes.
Architecture
Stepped pyramids in cut stone are pre-Hispanic. Churrigueresque church facades — dense carved retablos in stone — are 18th century. Tezontle, the porous red volcanic stone, marks central Mexico City. Muralled public buildings are 1920–1950.
Landscape
High valley ringed by volcanoes is the centre. Limestone flatland with cenotes and low jungle is Yucatán. Cactus and sierra is the north. Colonial towns sit around an arcaded plaza with a cathedral on one side.
