Architecture
Whitewashed churches with soapstone carving and gilt interiors are Minas Gerais Baroque, 1700–1780. Azulejo tilework on facades is Portuguese colonial. Curved reinforced concrete on pilotis is Niemeyer — Pampulha 1943, Brasília 1956–1960.
Landscape
Granite domes over a bay is Rio. Red earth and coffee rows are São Paulo state. Flooded forest and river the colour of tea is Amazonia. Dry, cracked caatinga scrub is the sertão.
Period tells
Coffee-loading quays and immigrant hostels are 1890–1930. Brasília's monumental axis is 1960. Favela hillsides expand visibly from the 1950s onwards in any Rio comparison shot.
