Argentina is horizontal: pampa grassland for a thousand kilometres, the Andes as a wall on the western edge, and Patagonian steppe running out into wind. Buenos Aires is European in ambition — Beaux-Arts stone and plane trees — and nothing else in the country looks like it.
Architecture
Grey stone Beaux-Arts blocks with mansard roofs and iron balconies are Buenos Aires, 1890–1930, when export money paid for the city. Low colonial whitewash with a tile roof and a single bell gable is the north-west, Salta and Jujuy. Corrugated-iron cottages with steep roofs are Patagonian and Welsh-influenced.
Landscape
Absolutely flat grassland with wire fencing and eucalyptus windbreaks is the pampa. Grey-green scrub, wind-bent bushes and gravel is Patagonian steppe. Bright red and ochre rock in layered bands means the Quebrada de Humahuaca in the far north-west.

Trams in Buenos Aires date a street scene before 1963. The Obelisco exists only after 1936. Political graffiti stencils and pot-banging crowds are 2001 or later — a very specific Argentine visual language.
