Chile is read by latitude. Rainless ochre desert in the north, Mediterranean vineyards and adobe in the centre, then rain, volcanoes and German-influenced timber in the south, ending in fjords. The Andes are on the left in every eastward view.
Architecture
Single-storey adobe with a tiled roof and an internal patio is central-valley colonial. Corrugated iron painted in strong colours on stilted hillsides is Valparaíso, post-1850. Timber shingle houses with steep roofs and Lutheran churches are the south, settled by Germans after 1850.
Landscape
Absolutely bare ochre ground with salt flats and no plant life is the Atacama. Snow-capped symmetrical cones over lakes are the Araucanía and Los Lagos volcanoes. Treeless windswept grass with sheep fencing is Magallanes, near the strait.
Period tells
Nitrate ghost towns with intact tin buildings date from 1880–1930, dead after synthetic nitrate. Open-pit copper terraces mean Chuquicamata, industrial from 1915. Post-earthquake concrete rebuilds are common after 1939, 1960 and 2010 — Chile's history is punctuated by them.
