    Bolivian History Guesser

One mountain in Bolivia financed the Spanish empire for two centuries, and the city beneath it was briefly among the largest in the world. Above 3,600 metres the light is hard, the air is thin and the architecture is unlike anywhere else in the Americas.

How to read a Bolivian scene

Bolivia is the altiplano — a treeless high plain between two Andean ranges, with a salt flat, a great lake and mining towns clinging to slopes — plus lowland forest most people never picture. Colonial architecture here is mestizo baroque, and it is unmistakable.

    Architecture

Church portals crowded with carved sirens, grapes, suns and Andean motifs are mestizo baroque, 1690–1780, and specific to the Potosí–La Paz–Arequipa axis. Adobe with tin roofs stacked up steep slopes is twentieth-century La Paz. Precision-fitted andesite with sunken plazas is Tiwanaku.

    Landscape

A white salt plain to the horizon with hexagonal ridges is Uyuni. Deep blue lake at 3,800 m with reed boats is Titicaca. A red-and-grey conical mountain looming directly over a town's rooftops is Cerro Rico at Potosí — no other Bolivian view looks like it.

    Period tells

Bowler hats on Aymara women are a twentieth-century tradition, not a colonial one — they appear from the 1920s. Cable-car gondolas over La Paz place you after 2014. Colonial silver-mine machinery and ingenio water wheels date from 1570 onward.
