Indonesian History Guesser

Seventeen thousand islands, the largest Buddhist monument on earth, the only place nutmeg grew, and a volcano whose 1883 eruption was heard 4,800 km away. Indonesian scenes reward anyone who can tell volcanic rock from coral and a Hindu temple from a Buddhist one.

How to read a Indonesian scene

Indonesia is volcanic: black sand, terraced rice on steep ash slopes and cones on the skyline through most of Java and Bali. The building traditions are Hindu-Buddhist stone, Islamic tiered timber mosques, Dutch colonial stucco and post-war concrete โ€” and they often share a street.

Architecture

Grey volcanic stone stepped pyramids and stupas are Central Javanese, 750โ€“930. Split gateways and tiered thatched meru shrines are Balinese Hindu. Mosques with three or five stacked pyramidal roofs rather than domes are the older Javanese form; big domes and minarets are twentieth century. Whitewashed shuttered villas with deep verandas are Dutch, 1700โ€“1940.

Landscape

Terraced rice on steep slopes with palms on the ridges is Java or Bali. Limestone karst towers over shallow green water are Raja Ampat or southern Sulawesi. Peat forest, blackwater rivers and low relief mean Kalimantan or Sumatra's east coast.

Period tells

Dutch script on a station or warehouse dates a scene before 1949. Bicycle rickshaws (becak) are common from the 1930s. Concrete flyovers and glass towers over kampung roofs in Jakarta are post-1975.
