How to read a Thai scene

Thailand is river delta and rice plain in the centre, forested hills in the north, and limestone-and-sea in the south. Temple form is the clock: lotus-bud towers, Khmer-influenced prang, and the mirrored, gilded roofs of the Bangkok era each belong to a different age.

    Architecture

A stupa shaped like a lotus bud on a stepped base is Sukhothai, 1250โ€“1450. A tall corncob-shaped prang is Khmer-derived and read as Ayutthaya, 1350โ€“1767. Multi-tiered orange-and-green glazed roofs with gilt finials and glass mosaic are Rattanakosin, 1782 onward.

    Landscape

Flat rice with canals, stilt houses and water hyacinth is the central plain. Round limestone karst rising straight from the sea is Phang Nga or Krabi. Cool forested ridges with terraced fields and pine are the far north around Chiang Mai.

    Period tells

Brick temple cores with the stucco stripped off are ruins of 1767, not deliberate design. Teak shophouses with ornate fretwork are 1900โ€“1940. Elevated expressways and Skytrain viaducts over Bangkok date a scene after 1999.
