Mongolia is space: short-grass steppe, gravel desert in the Gobi and glaciated peaks in the west, with almost no fences and no trees for hundreds of kilometres. Nearly all its built history is monastic, and most of that was destroyed in the 1930s.
Architecture
White felt gers with an orange-painted door and a stove pipe are timeless — they date nothing on their own. Chinese-style monastery halls with upturned eaves are 1580–1930. Stalinist stone civic blocks around a square are Ulaanbaatar, 1945–1960; raw high-rises around them are post-2005 mining money.
Landscape
Rolling green steppe with distant grazing herds is the central and northern country. Red sandstone cliffs and gravel plain are the Gobi. Larch forest and lakes belong to the far north near Khövsgöl; glaciers and eagles mean the Altai in Bayan-Ölgii.
Period tells
Classical Mongolian script written vertically is pre-1941 or deliberately traditional; Cyrillic is 1941 onwards. Ovoo cairns with blue prayer scarves appear in every century. Solar panels and motorbikes outside a ger place the scene after about 2000.
