How to read a Vietnamese scene

Vietnam layers Chinese-influenced imperial architecture, French colonial streets and rapid modern building along a very long, very narrow country. Water is in almost every frame.

Architecture

Curved-ridge temple roofs and imperial citadels are Nguyแป…n-era Huแบฟ. Ochre-washed French colonial villas, shuttered windows and wide boulevards are 1880โ€“1954. Narrow tube houses stacked five storeys are the modern city norm.

Landscape

Karst pillars over water in Hแบก Long and Ninh Bรฌnh, terraced rice in the northern highlands, and the Mekong Delta's channels, sampans and floating markets.

Period tells

Conical hats and bicycles read early-to-mid 20th century. Helicopters, sandbagged bases and US matรฉriel are 1965โ€“1973. Motorbike swarms and shopfront signage in Latin-script Vietnamese are 1990 onwards.
