Pakistan runs from tidal Indus delta to 8,000-metre peaks in 2,000 km. The architecture is baked brick almost everywhere โ Harappan, Mughal and colonial alike โ with red sandstone and marble reserved for imperial work, and carved wood in the mountain valleys.
Architecture
Small uniform fired bricks in tight courses with no ornament are Harappan, 2600โ1900 BC. Red sandstone with white marble inlay, bulbous domes and slender minarets are Mughal, 1550โ1700. Yellow stone Gothic-Revival with pointed arches is British Raj, 1860โ1930, concentrated in Karachi and Lahore.
Landscape
Flat irrigated Punjab with canal banks and brick kilns is the agricultural heartland. Sand and low scrub with camels is Sindh and Balochistan. Grey glacial rivers between vertical rock walls with green terraces perched above are Gilgit-Baltistan.
Period tells
Truck art โ mirrored, painted cabs with hanging chains โ appears from the 1950s. Colonial railway architecture in Lahore and Karachi is 1860 onwards. Anything captioned with both Urdu and English signage is post-1947.
