      The catastrophic eruption of Krakatoa obliterated most of the island and triggered colossal tsunamis. The blast was so thunderous it ruptured the eardrums of sailors forty miles away and was heard across the Indian Ocean.

      VOC Forces Capture and Burn Jayakarta

      Dutch East India Company forces under Jan Pieterszoon Coen besieged and burned the port town of Jayakarta. They quickly built a walled fortress upon the ruins, establishing the heavily fortified colonial capital of Batavia.
