How to read a Indian scene

India stacks temple, sultanate, Mughal and Raj traditions in the same cities, then adds a dense modern layer over all of it. The material โ€” carved sandstone, marble inlay, lime plaster, painted concrete โ€” usually dates the scene.

    Architecture

Shikhara towers over carved stone are Hindu temple architecture. Red sandstone with white marble inlay, bulbous domes and chhatri kiosks are Mughal, 1550โ€“1700. Indo-Saracenic public buildings โ€” domes on a Victorian plan โ€” are Raj, 1870โ€“1930.

    Landscape

Dry thorn scrub and fort-topped hills is Rajasthan. Coconut palm and backwater is Kerala. Terraced tea on steep slopes is Assam or the Nilgiris. The Gangetic plain is flat, hazy and densely farmed.

    Period tells

Broad-gauge steam and cast-iron station sheds are 1853 onwards. Ambassador cars run from 1958 to 2014 and mark almost any street photo in that window. Le Corbusier's raw concrete is Chandigarh, 1950s.
