Tanzanian History Guesser

The Swahili coast's richest city state, an island of cloves and carved doors, the shortest war in history and the gorge where human origins were rewritten. Tanzania's history is coastal and deep-time at the same time.

How to read a Tanzanian scene

Tanzania is a hot Indian Ocean coast with coral-stone towns, a dry central plateau, and the Rift with its volcanoes and crater. Swahili and Omani building on the coast; almost nothing monumental inland before the German and British colonial period.

Architecture

Coral-rag walls with lime plaster, flat roofs and heavily carved brass-studded doors are Swahili and Omani Zanzibar, 1700โ€“1900. Domed and pillared tombs are earlier Swahili, 1300โ€“1500. German colonial buildings with heavy masonry and arcades in Dar es Salaam and Tanga are 1890โ€“1916.

Landscape

A snow-capped freestanding cone over savanna is Kilimanjaro. A complete unbroken caldera rim enclosing grassland is Ngorongoro. Flat acacia plain with granite kopjes is the Serengeti; white sand and coral rag with dhows is the Zanzibar archipelago.

Period tells

Ujamaa villagisation โ€” planned rows of houses along a road in the interior โ€” dates from 1967โ€“1975. The TAZARA railway is 1975, Chinese-built. Colonial-era stone with pointed arches in Bagamoyo is 1880s, at the end of the caravan route from the interior.
