Tunisian History Guesser

Carthage nearly beat Rome, and Rome then made this coast one of its richest provinces โ€” which is why there is a 35,000-seat amphitheatre in a small inland town. Add the first great mosque of the Maghreb and a revolution that started a decade.

How to read a Tunisian scene

Tunisia is Mediterranean in the north โ€” olive, cork oak, whitewash and blue โ€” and Saharan in the south, with salt flats, oases and underground houses. Roman ruins are everywhere and unusually complete, because much of the country was never rebuilt over.

Architecture

Whitewashed cubes with blue doors and studded nail patterns are Tunisian coastal, most famously Sidi Bou Said. Square minarets belong to the Maghreb; the Kairouan tower, 836, is the oldest standing. Ribats โ€” fortified coastal monasteries with a watchtower โ€” are Aghlabid, 800โ€“900. Fortified granaries of stacked vaulted cells (ksour) are southern Berber.

Landscape

Olive groves in wide grids to the horizon are the Sahel around Sfax. A white salt pan with a shimmering horizon is Chott el Jerid. Palm oases below a rock escarpment are Tozeur and Nefta; troglodyte pit-houses mean Matmata.

Period tells

Punic remains are scarce because Rome levelled them โ€” most standing ancient masonry is Roman, 100 BC to 400 AD. French colonial arcades and cathedrals are 1881โ€“1956. Star Wars sets left standing in the south date from 1976 and 1999, which is a genuine trap.
