Ghana is coast, forest and northern savanna. White-painted European forts sit directly on surf-beaten rock; inland, the material is timber and earth, and the most information in any scene is usually in the cloth people are wearing.
Architecture
Whitewashed forts with bastions and gun platforms above a beach are 1482–1800 and specific to this coast. Earth mosques with projecting timbers and conical minarets are Sudanic style in the north. Concrete Independence-era civic architecture — arches, black stars, bold curves — is 1957–1966.
Landscape
Heavy surf on a low rocky shore with palms is the Gulf of Guinea coast. Closed-canopy rainforest with cocoa beneath it is the Ashanti belt. Open grassland with baobabs and dry riverbeds is the north beyond Tamale.
Period tells
Kente in bold woven strips is Asante and appears throughout, but adinkra symbols stamped on cloth are a separate tradition worth spotting. Fantasy coffins in Accra date from the 1950s onward. Volta dam infrastructure at Akosombo is 1965.
