How to read a Saudi scene

Saudi Arabia is desert with four distinct faces: red sandstone outcrops in the north-west, volcanic lava fields and coral-stone port towns on the Red Sea, mud-brick oasis towns in the central Najd, and oil infrastructure and glass towers in the east.

    Architecture

Multi-storey coral-block houses with fretted wooden roshan balconies are Hijazi, Jeddah's old town, 1700–1930. Mud brick with triangular parapets and small blue-framed windows is Najdi, and Diriyah is the type site. Rock-cut façades with stepped crow's-foot crowns are Nabataean, first century.

    Landscape

Orange dune seas with no rock are the Rub' al Khali and the Nafud. Isolated sandstone mesas over pale sand mean AlUla. A long escarpment with palm oases at its foot is the Tuwaiq, which is where the Najdi towns are.

    Period tells

Camel caravans on the Hajj routes appear until the 1930s; the Hejaz Railway operates only from 1908 to 1920. Flare stacks and pipelines are post-1938. Glass towers and eight-lane highways date Riyadh or Jeddah after 1975.
