    Jordanian History Guesser

A rose-red city cut into sandstone by caravan traders, a Roman provincial town preserved almost whole, Crusader castles on the King's Highway and an Arab Revolt that took a Red Sea port from the desert side. Jordan is a country of very well-preserved single sites.

How to read a Jordanian scene

Jordan is desert plateau cut by deep wadis, with a rift valley on its western edge holding the Dead Sea. The stone changes colour by region โ€” pale limestone in the north, red and banded sandstone in the south โ€” and that alone will place a scene.

    Architecture

Faรงades cut into cliff faces with classical columns and urns are Nabataean, 100 BCโ€“150 AD. Colonnaded streets with Corinthian capitals and paved cardo are Roman, 100โ€“300. Basalt-block villages with stone-slab roofs are Hauran, northern Jordan. Crusader and Ayyubid castles with glacis slopes are 1140โ€“1250.

    Landscape

Red sand between towering isolated sandstone massifs is Wadi Rum. A flat white salt shore below barren brown hills is the Dead Sea. Rolling wheat and olive country with pine is the northern highlands around Ajloun.

    Period tells

Hejaz Railway track and stations date from 1904โ€“1908 and were heavily attacked in 1917. Refugee-camp concrete around Amman marks 1948, 1967 and post-2011. Petra as a tourist site with staircases and signage is post-1985.
