    The Montreal Protocol is signed

    Nations agree to phase out the chemicals destroying the ozone layer.

    The Montreal Protocol committed its signatories to phasing out the chlorofluorocarbons that were thinning the ozone layer, only two years after the Antarctic ozone hole was reported. It became the first treaty in United Nations history to be ratified by every country in the world. Measurements now show the ozone layer slowly recovering.
