The Tacoma Narrows Bridge twists apart in a moderate wind.
The suspension bridge over the Tacoma Narrows had twisted in the wind since it opened four months earlier, earning the nickname Galloping Gertie. On this morning the deck tore itself apart on film, with no human casualties. The footage became the standard teaching case in aeroelastic instability, and changed how suspension bridges are tested.
