Ground is broken in Arlington for the largest office building in the world.
1973
The Chilean coup
Pinochet's forces bomb the presidential palace and Allende dies.
Chile's armed forces bombarded the La Moneda presidential palace and overthrew the elected government of Salvador Allende, who died that day. General Augusto Pinochet's junta then ruled for seventeen years, during which thousands were killed, disappeared or tortured. Declassified United States records have since been central to establishing what Washington knew and did before and after the coup.

The September 11 attacks
Hijacked airliners destroy the World Trade Center and strike the Pentagon.
Hijackers flew passenger aircraft into both towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon; a fourth aircraft came down in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back. Nearly three thousand people were killed. The response reshaped air travel, surveillance law and two decades of foreign policy.
