      A team of American amateur and collegiate ice hockey players achieved one of the greatest upsets in sports history by defeating the heavily favored, four-time defending gold-medalist Soviet national team during the heart of the Cold War.

      The first Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge universities was held on the River Thames after Cambridge challenged Oxford to a rowing match. The event drew massive crowds, establishing a fierce sporting rivalry that continues today.

      Siege Match of Calcio Storico Fiorentino

      Even while their city was under severe siege by imperial troops, defiant Florentines organized a massive game of early football in the Piazza Santa Croce to mock the enemy and demonstrate their unbroken morale and civic pride.

      First Tour de France Pyrenees Climb

      Seeking to make the race more grueling, organizers routed the Tour de France into the high Pyrenees for the first time. Octave Lapize famously reached the summit of the unpaved Col du Tourmalet and called the organizers assassins.

      Inaugural Open Championship at Prestwick

      The first Open Championship was held to determine the world's greatest golfer following the death of Allan Robertson. Eight professionals played three rounds on Prestwick's twelve-hole links course, with Willie Park Sr. winning the Challenge Belt.
