      Tiepolo Frescoes the Würzburg Residence Staircase

      The Venetian master completed the largest ceiling fresco in the world above the grand staircase, an unbroken 677-square-meter triumph of Baroque art depicting the four known continents paying their respects.

      First Public Test of the Diesel Engine

      After years of dangerous prototypes—one of which nearly killed him—Rudolf Diesel successfully demonstrated his revolutionary high-compression internal combustion engine at the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg, changing global industry forever.
